Optimization of Multimodal Cargo Transportation

Optimization of Multimodal Cargo Transportation

20 February 2023

Friends, we continue to acquaint all partners of RSW Systems with the developer's publications, which present string technologies to the public. This time we are talking about the search for new logistics schemes and effective financial models by companies involved in cargo transportation. The transition to multimodality was the result of a drawdown in the industry in 2020. The use of different modes of transport within one order allows solving complex and non-standard tasks. But organizational problems and lack of coherence in the work of carriers lead to missed deadlines and financial losses. String transport solutions can reduce time and simplify clearance at individual stages of multimodal forwarding.

Delivery of goods today requires special organizational skills from logisticians. It is important not only to assign a route, but also to coordinate the process, considering the punctuality of all participants in the chain. In multimodal transportation, several modes of transport are usually involved, for example, cargo can arrive by sea, then get on a car or railway and again end up in a port to leave the country by water. This approach helps to expand the geography, reduce costs, minimize risks, combine delivery methods, considering the interests of the end customer.

But a complex scheme needs to be carefully worked out: each subsequent link in the supply chain should not limit the capabilities and work of the others. The current conditions in which transport companies operate today require optimization. It is important to promptly resolve the following issues.

- Insufficiently developed infrastructure.

- Inefficient use of routes.

- Losses due to empty run.

When organizing container transportation, until recently, two options were in the lead: cheap and time-consuming sea delivery, as well as a more expensive, but faster land option. The transition to multimodal freight forwarding using the project's solutions will increase competitiveness, reduce transit time, and save money.

String tracks are located above the existing infrastructure. Routes are laid along the shortest trajectory, which saves travel time. Automation of the main processes helps to save time for trans-shipment and direct transportation. This reduces the load on existing logistics infrastructure facilities and speeds up door-to-door delivery. The track structure is resistant to extreme temperatures, so it can be placed in different climatic zones, where the movement of trains or road transport is difficult.

The publication can be read in its entirety on the site of the developer of string technologies.
