Intermodality, Automation, Digitalization and Customer-Oriented Approach

Intermodality, Automation, Digitalization and Customer-Oriented Approach

18 September 2018

Speakers were European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc, German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer, Deutsche Bahn Chairman of Board Richard Lutz, as well as top managers of Alstom, Bombardier and Siemens. The speeches were focused on intermodality of transport services, automation, digitalization, reduction of CO2 emissions and customer-oriented approach.

Based on a large survey of railway transport users, the European Commissioner summed up the results of the work done to develop the industry for five years. She noted the achievement of success and the growth in consumers’ satisfaction with the quality of services provided. However, she pointed out that there is still a lot of work to be done. In particular, it is necessary to increase the level of transport accessibility for people with disabilities, to set up coordination and interaction between different modes of transport, to create intercepting parking lots, to solve the problem of the last mile and so on.

German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer focused on the importance to develop rail transport in view of the country’s tasks to reduce the emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. According to him, the goal is to make the maximum number of people to refuse traveling by private cars in favor of rail transport, as the most environmentally friendly one of all the existing types. The plans are to double the number of railroad users by 2030. Europe intends to reduce the noise level of railway transport and the volume of energy consumption by 3-8 percent within the same period. “We should provide people with a feeling of joy from traveling by rail, making it as attractive to the consumer as possible,” said Mr. Scheuer.

The problem of rail transport digitalization is also among the key issues on the agenda of the forum InnoTrans 2018. According to Deutsche Bahn Chairman of Board Richard Lutz, it “should become part of a unified infrastructure”, which would cover the entire public transport including cars that operate on sharing principles, as well as bicycle transport distributed on similar basis. Among the directions in this area, there are discussed not only digital ticketing and mobile applications in order to find out the schedule. We are also talking about the introduction of preventive maintenance technologies, as well as the creation of a unified railway management system within a more comprehensive complex system.”

As Bombardier CEO Lauren Troger said, alongside with the automation of the transport complexes management, the most challenging is the other goal – “providing zero level of failures”. Another interesting idea was expressed by the representative of Alstom Henri Poupart-Lafarge, who pointed out that today it is more important not to increase transportation speed, but to improve environmental performance and create more flexible systems capable to respond to situational demands of the transport user 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

SkyWay corresponds to the trends indicated in the opening ceremony of InnoTrans 2018. We have everything that the market requires from the transport of the future, and therefore there is no doubt that we will occupy a rightful place in this market. Just like the premiere of the high-speed unibus took its rightful place among the other 146 world premieres of this large-scale forum.
