Future on Earth and in the Sky

26 September 2017

Abandonment to use internal combustion engines, transition to robomobiles with fully automated control systems are important trends of technological development. As Gas2 reports, last week 10 major companies announced their intention to fully switch over to using electric vehicles by 2030. Serious progress is being made in the development of autopilots. Russia has launched a national program “Digital economy”, which provides the start of pilot operation of self-driving vehicles on public roads in five cities by 2020. And although many transport experts express doubts about the possibility of transition to drones in the near future, research is in progress and receives funding.

The Ministry of education and science of the Russian Federation supported the project from the Centre of robotics development under the Innopolis University, which conducts research on the subject “Development of a modular system for remote and autonomous control of commercial transport by means of complex aerial reconnaissance of the route using domestic components”. It is planned to control the ground transport with the help of drones that will collect data on road conditions, obstacles on the route, etc.

Budget financing will amount to 72 million roubles in 2017-2019. Financial support in exactly the same amount will be provided by the public JSC “KAMAZ”, the other partner of the Centre of robotics development under the Innopolis University.

In theory, the solution proposed by Innopolis will increase the amount of data used by an autopilot while moving and, consequently, will improve transportation safety. However, it does not solve the basic problem. In the majority countries of the world, roads are not ready (in Russian) to introduce self-driving transport. The transition to robomobiles requires a radical restructuring of the transport communication network, which is comparable by cost to the construction of roads from scratch. The situation with Innopolis demonstrates once again the tendency and immediately detects a problem. However, it again affirms that alongside with the progress of existing development trends, it is necessary to seek fundamentally new solutions, to which SkyWay systems can be attributed.
