“The Distance Must Be Run to the Finish Line”

“The Distance Must Be Run to the Finish Line”

24 Junе 2020

The main stage of mastering the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) in the Modern TRIZ (MTRIZ) educational and project format by SkyWay specialists that we have already reported about in our previous publications, has been completed. Today we again remotely interviewed Michael Orloff, Professor, Doctor of technical Sciences, founder and Head of the Academy of Instrumental Modern TRIZ (AIMTRIZ, Berlin) and Global Enterprise for Mastery in TRIZ (GEMTRIZ, Minsk), Director of MTRIZ project.

Mikhail Kirichenko: Michael, on June 15, the last participants of the “race” under the Modern TRIZ program had to cross the finish line. Is it possible to comment on the completed project?

Michael Orloff: Mikhail, indeed, any project is a kind of if not marathon, then a long-distance running for sure. Moreover, without a preliminary training on the subject. So sometimes not everyone reaches the end. Do you remember a song by Vysotsky: “I rushed for ten thousand, as if for five hundred – and got exhausted...”? Well, and the line before – about the reasons: “There is a will, if the forces are too much, but I got carried away.”

But first – about the good and main things. The result at Unitsky String Technologies Co. surprised me. After a painstaking work with each employee, you can say without raising your head during the project, today there is an understanding of the overall picture: I have never seen such a level in any of the dozens of companies I have worked with over the past 15 years! This is a serious surprise. The percentage of excellent works is more than 5 (!) times higher than even in the “best” companies! The gap is very large! I myself went through selected works one after another yesterday with a kind of happy feeling, I was not disappointed anywhere, and when I looked at the percentage of the total number, I was surprised: almost half of the works – at the highest rating?! This is the first, obvious – and very pleasant – result of the project.

М.К.: Of course, this result also makes us very happy. Thanks. What do you see as the basis for this result?

М.О.: As regards the basis, I have already mentioned it in the previous interview – an unusually high concentration of young people who are talented and competent in engineering. Of course, this is the basis.

But I must also mention the team of colleague-managers of the Company, Elena Popenko and Lyubov Kulbeda, without whose careful and persistent work such a successful implementation of the project would have been simply impossible. First, the participants of the project were selected in a short time, the starting lecture week at the President Hotel was well organized, as you have already reported in the news, and then this very “long-distance running” of three months long.

М.К.: Michael, thank you also for evaluating the work of our specialists-managers. But after your first words, I can’t help but ask if everyone has covered the distance, do we have outsiders?

М.О.: Well, since you with your professional experience instantly caught the bitterness in my foreplay, I feel it my duty to say not only about the leaders, but also about the outsiders. Yes, there are such colleagues, this is about 6 percent, but it is still a loss. And if these outsiders were not helped by my personal appeals to them in my letters, then I would like to address them here again, and to all other participants in the project. Let some of them draw conclusions for themselves, and let others strengthen their self-respect. Both will benefit SkyWay project.

And my appeal is about the following. In 1970, the USSR released a stunning film by Elem Klimov “Sport, sport, sport”. And it has a story about an athlete little known to general public – Estonian long-distance runner Hubert Pyarnakivi. His personal victory in one dramatic 10,000-meter race under incredibly difficult conditions was, of course, prepared by years of training, but achieved by the most decisive factor – the will.

So, for me, his words after the race, when he not only reached the finish line, but also survived in the literal sense of the word, became one of the principles of my life. Hubert Pyarnakivi said: “The distance must be run to the finish. Each time – to the finish line.” Later, in another interview, he said that this is what his coach taught him.

This is what I want to wish to all employees of Unitsky String Technologies Co. And I know that if Anatoli Unitsky did not follow this principle, there would be no SkyWay and SpaceWay projects today. But these companies exist. And they will grow, because engineer Unitsky brings his every race to the finish, to a personal victory, striving for his finishing ribbons, to implementation of his ideas, despite all the difficulties that he had, has and will undoubtedly have. So does his entire team.

By the way, in the same film there are wise poetic lines of Bella Akhmadullina, read by herself. This is also about the philosophy professed and followed de facto by such strong personalities like Hubert Pyarnakivi, like Anatoli Unitsky and everyone who worked on the MTRIZ project at nights, on holidays and weekends.

М.К.: Michael, thank you very much for your story. I think that this project is not just an episode in the formation of our Company, but an important incentive for further growth and development of SkyWay project, to which Modern TRIZ and your lessons, I hope, will continue to make their valuable contribution.

For reference: MTRIZ (M means “Modern”), or modern theory of inventive problem solving is a field of knowledge about the mechanisms of technical systems development and methods of solving inventive problems, which is a generalized experience of invention and study of the laws of science and technology.
