The SkyWay innovative pole has recently moved to the United Arab Emirates, where the main events in the development of the project take place. Nevertheless, work in the homeland of the General Designer is underway. Which one? Anatoli Unitsky will tell it himself.

From the frankest story for the entire existence of Unitsky String Technologies Co., you will learn about the main components and assemblies of a unified undercarriage of heavy-duty rolling stock, both freight and passenger. The creator of SkyWay will reveal the specifics of the configuration and the power of the motor wheels, which allow a car weighing 10 tons to reach speeds of up to 150 km/h, and explain what an adjustable suspension is capable of adapting to irregularities in the path. Anatoli Eduardovich will not ignore the cooling system for elevated temperatures, main and backup power devices, algorithms and mechanisms that allow the wheels to maintain an optimal position relative to the rail, the progress of vehicle certification and much more, which you will learn about by watching the video below shot at the production of Unitsky String Technologies Co.

The world is presently overwhelmed with the coronavirus pandemic. For many companies it is a serious problem. However, SkyWay Group of Companies continues to work in the United Arab Emirates, in Sharjah. We are building there an Innovation Center of the new mode of transport ― SkyWay. This work involves professionals from more than 20 countries. The things we are doing now at the Innovation Center in Sharjah shows a construction part mostly. You can see that we are installing supports, filling foundations with concrete, building stations, terminals, turnout switches, pre-stressed string track structure (400 meters already). The first test tracks have been already completed. But this is a construction part. It is also very important for certification, because if we don’t do it in the design that will be used for series production, we will certainly not be able to certify it. But there is also another part of work that is not visible in Sharjah. It is the machine-building part that is performed here in Belarus, in the city of Minsk, at our production facility. Right behind me, assembly of one of the vehicles for the Innovation Center in Sharjah is going on.

I am standing now at the undercarriage of our rolling stock that is used as a base in suspended 25-passenger unibuses and cargo transport including those for transportation of sea containers weighing up to 35 tons. This is an absolutely innovative vehicle. We can even see it by its elements and units. Now I’d like to tell about it briefly. This is the so-called motor-wheel. In this case the 60-kW motor is set beyond the wheel limits so as not to pass over impacts and vibrations to the motor. That’s why it is connected with a semi-axle. And there is a disk brake here. Ball-bearings and wheel-hubs are set here. In fact, this is a motor-wheel. We have 4 of them on the undercarriage. Therefore, the total power of more than 200 kW is sufficient to move this vehicle weighing up to 10 tons at 150-km/h speed. This is a public transport. Later on, an automatic docking unit will be installed here. And here we have a frame, on which all the equipment is installed. It will be cushioned relatively to the cabin with passengers or a frame for cargo transportation. The undercarriage is also cushioned and it has a pneumatic suspension, which is adjustable, i.e. we will enter a station at the floor level. It means that the floor of the vehicle will be always at the same level with the station floor regardless of the number of passengers boarding, because the suspension is adjustable and the vehicle may shift lower or higher. In addition, it will also adjust to track unevenness so as to keep a high smoothness of riding.

This is a cooling system, because heat emission occurs here. The cooling system should operate in tropics, where the temperature may reach 50 degrees, and under the hood ― even 60 degrees. Therefore, a powerful cooling system should be available here. There is also an energy storage. We have power supply from the grid, through the wheels and rails. The rails are insulated from each other and from the supports. They are plus and minus with direct current at about 750 Volts. But we have a battery, too. In case of a failure in the power supply system and loss of power, it will provide a ride for about 100 km to a station or a depot. It will continue to operate for some time if the power supply fails.

The undercarriage has a hydraulic drive for turning, therefore, the vehicle will automatically keep the rail gage without touching the rail with its flange as it happens in the railway. That means the rolling of the wheel will be always stable and the wheel will roll along the rail center.

Here is the control unit for the whole vehicle. Our production is also with hi-tech. We have a high-capacity machinery: five-access machines, laser cutting, special bending equipment. Some of the machines are unique in Belarus, although Belarus is a well-known machine-building country. This sector is developed very well here, including automobile manufacturing. It is very well known that new types of transport stimulated the development of other industries, like rocket building, production of new materials, new approaches to management, creation of computers and so on. The automobile has also stimulated chemistry, oil processing, engine manufacturing, etc. Therefore, naturally, SkyWay demands and attracts innovations from many sectors. We also create many innovations for this transport to operate better than any other existing mode of transport. We are creating the most ecologically clean type of transport. It operates on electric power. Actually, we do not withdraw land, because we have overpasses, and supports occupy very small plots of land. This transport will be the safest, because there are no intersections with other modes of transport, pedestrians, with the life on the land surface. Our transport runs above the land surface. Therefore, according to our analysis, safety will rise by 1,000 times compared to automobile transport. Our SkyWay transport will be the most economical, because we have steel wheels, not a pneumatic tire, like in cars. Our transport runs above the ground, therefore, the airfoil effect does not appear and we have a unique aerodynamics. So, we are creating a unique transport that will become leading in the XXI century due to its technological advantages. And SkyWay Innovation Center in Sharjah is already becoming the center for creating this transport. These transport innovations will spread throughout the world from there, from Sharjah. Naturally, the first projects will be implemented in Sharjah.
