Expert: “I am in Favor of Building SkyWay in Sevastopol”

02 November 2018

They again started to discuss the possibilities of infrastructural development in Sevastopol – in particular, the possibility of building metro. The authors of the project propose to connect the main part of the city with the Northern side by means of a subway line, which will also pass under water across the Sevastopol Bay. The idea of creating a subway in the city appeared not for the first time, and has been criticized more than once because of specific seismic conditions of the region and the high cost of underwater construction.

The President of the Crimean Academy of Sciences, Сhairman of the Crimean Republican Association “Ecology and World” Victor Tarasenko spoke about the issues of safety and feasibility of building a subway in Sevastopol. He noted that it makes sense to consider other, more suitable technologies in such infrastructure projects:

“I am in favor of building SkyWay in Sevastopol to pass to the Northern side, which will be several times less-costly than metro, safer and eco-friendlier. It is SkyWay string transport that is becoming very popular today.”

Victor Tarasenko also pointed out that an active work is already underway with local authorities that will have to decide whether Sevastopol will become the first Russian city with SkyWay transport:

“SkyWay string transport technologies are very promising for the future, it is an environmentally friendly and cost-efficient transport. As far as I know, the developers are already negotiating with the city authorities, with the Governor about trying to make this pilot project for the Russian Federation right on the Crimean Peninsula. It is not available anywhere in Russia yet. They are very cautious everywhere, afraid to accept something new. Maybe, Sevastopol will become the first city in Russia where SkyWay routes will appear.”
