InnoTrans 2018: Primary Review and SkyWay Positioning

InnoTrans 2018: Primary Review and SkyWay Positioning

20 September 2018

A lot of men in business suits use the services of the Berlin metro to get to the exhibition InnoTrans 2018 in Messe Berlin. The carriages are absolutely packed in the hours before opening. Thus the trend, announced at the opening ceremony, of a mass transition to the use of public transport and the abandonment of personal cars is put into practice. These people are engineers, marketing consultants, designers in the field of transport from around the world. They came to share their vision of the future and get to know how others present it. Giants like Siemens, Hitachi and Alstom demonstrate the best of what they have created and examine the innovations of competitors. Today it is not only about trains and railways anymore. Here everyone aspires to offer the widest possible range of services, including management systems, data collection and analysis, various additional accounting tools, control and optimization services, as well as services that solve the problem of the last mile and much more. They talk about intermodality, digitalization, automation and customer-oriented approach. These concepts set the real vector in the development of the industry that is acquiring its skeleton and flesh in expositions of the companies represented at InnoTrans. General trends, achieved results and perspective directions are the subject of this publication.

The exhibition is very large, so it will not be possible to see it well in a day or two. What we started with is an outdoor exposition where existing samples of top-rated trains and wagons are installed on rails, as well as pavilion stands of industrial giants. The overall impression of what we saw at the outdoor ground is development and improvement in every detail of the loco and the carriage, integration of everything that can only be integrated from modern technologies into anything that can move along the rails.

All or almost all passenger carriages and trains presented at the exhibition have a low floor to facilitate passenger boarding, including people with limited mobility.

Despite the almost 30-degree heat outside, it is cool Inside due to modern air conditioning systems. Transport is equipped with surveillance cameras, there is a socket for connecting a laptop or smartphone at each seat, a usb-connector and various systems for informing the passenger about the most important parameters of travel.

Most of the trains have wi-fi, baby dressing tables, special areas for wheelchairs, etc., etc., etc.

A baby dressing table in the toilet is a necessary thing for many; it increases the mobility of young mothers, usually somewhat limited in this sense.

Great attention is paid to the development of bicycle traffic in Europe. According to many experts, this transport is a big part of the future and great opportunities for solving many problems. Hybrid bicycles with an electric motor are gaining Popularity. Charging stations will be offered for them in trains.

In addition to this, almost everywhere you can hear or read about increased energy efficiency, reduced weight and noise, modularity and flexibility of the layout. Transport manufacturers do everything to make the passenger feel ultimately comfortable.

InnoTrans 2018 exhibition proves that digitalization of transport is not an intention, but a fact, a direction in which a lot of work has been done. Systems for calculating the parameters of transport systems optimization, financial management, collection, processing and analysis of large data volumes, algorithms for situational adaptation of systems – all of this has already been implemented in operating systems.

Siemens is working with Big Data at a wide extent. To our question about whether they display a concept or an operating system, they told us that their exposition shows a 100% working version

Transport producers try to take into account every detail: you may live near a station, it may be convenient for you to get to a station by bicycle – we meet your preferences and we make a special section for pedal transport in the carriage; if your destination is far from the point of arrival of the train, we offer you a special electric vehicle that you can rent out at the station and it will drive you where you want it. Moreover: you prefer rock music to pop – we’ll also take this into account so that your mobile gadget connected to our wi-fi would offer you only the things that you like – just like in a cafe where the bartender knows you for a long time and all the preferences of his client.

All major players work with Big Data. Everyone will have his own proposal, which centers on the fact that if you buy, for example, a system from Siemens, then you can buy all the other needed stuff right from the same manufacturer. The logic is to provide a transport service from A to Z, support and comfort for the client from the point of departure to the point of arrival.

A mobile application that unites all types of public transport in a single system.

An autonomous electric vehicle from Siemens as a variant of transport “from station to station”.

The bike sharing system to solve the problem of the last mile from Siemens again.

The interest of corporations in providing the widest possible range of services is understandable. They will enter the market with a large and interconnected set of products, from rolling stock to adaptive logistics systems, capable of changing traffic schedule and intensity contextually, depending on the load on the line. Such systems will allow the passenger to orient himself in the situation as much as possible, up to informing about the preferred place on the platform taking into account the charge capacity of carriages and the location of points of interest (shops, cafes, cultural centers, etc.) along the way, in relation of the transport user to individual preferences. However, it is obvious, including for the mainstream companies, that they must cooperate with each other and other mobility providers to improve the quality of transport services. This is also much talked about. The companies are principally open to interaction and are constantly searching for new solutions that are especially relevant given the active demand for the means of a trans-communication collaboration – systems that can effectively fill up the niches that arise in the process of global integration. SkyWay can also be referred to such systems at the initial stages of integration.

SkyWay display stand differs from everything that we managed to see at the exhibition. While the others are busy optimizing various components of well-known vehicles, a fundamentally new solution is presented here. But, on the other hand, SkyWay proclaims the same values as other exhibitors. Intermodality, digitalization, automation and customer-oriented approach are outlined in the philosophy of string transport from the very beginning. Like other companies, SkyWay offers not just rolling stock or roads, but the whole range of services that allow to accompany the passenger from the point of departure to the point of arrival with maximum comfort. In this respect, the technology looks even more preferable, since the configuration of SkyWay systems allows to approach closer to the type of mobility that will be personal, affordable and environmentally friendly at the same time.

Here we see the decay of the curse of infrastructural giants, which are trying to make public transport most comfortable for everyone again and again, although it includes some limitations of personal space by definition. SkyWay can go the simplest way offering personal transport at the cost of public one.

The use of blockchain technologies, work with Big Data, creation of automatic control systems for complexes with the possibility to adapt the schedule to the volume of passenger flow, innovative developments in the field of infrastructure construction, creation of additional services for people with mobility limitations, etc. demonstrate the systematic approach of SkyWay and are aimed at comprehensive inclusion into the processes of transformation in the local and global transport system that go on in full swing.

InnoTrans exhibition is gaining momentum. Stands and pavilions are the environment for communication of professionals, exchange of experience and the search for joint solutions. SkyWay engineers get acquainted with colleagues from the world of major transport. They get acquainted with us. High-speed and other SkyWay solutions were noticed and carefully studied by representatives of all major companies participating at InnoTrans. They appreciate the potential of the technology, noting that SkyWay has no analogues in terms of great areas for its possible application, as well as the flexibility of approach that is so important today. High-speed personal transit, urban public transport in communication systems between the existing logistics hubs, communication with the suburbs, creation of channels to transport passengers and cargo over water obstacles and in highlands, port container haulage and much more. Discussions are very active. The team of engineers and managers who arrived at the exhibition, led by SkyWay General designer Anatoly Yunitskiy, held dozens of meetings and negotiations. And, already traditionally, our exhibition site is among the most visited ones.
