How to stop wasting time and money in traffic jams?

27 September 2018

How much money does each of us lose while standing in traffic jams? And how much time does not a single person, but a whole state spend on dead time? Not go into details - these are huge amounts going down the tubes. Researchers, inventors and managers from various countries are looking for a solution to the problem of congested traffic and offer all types of solutions. SkyWay project also has Its version.

How Can We Stop Wasting Time and Money in Traffic Jams?

SkyWay Technologies Co. offers its own method to solve the problem of traffic jams

Road congestions in Minsk are just a word combination that provokes only laughter among our compatriots living in Moscow or some other metropolis. The issue of congested streets is not crucial for Belarus at the moment – however, time is marching on, the capital is growing up by hundreds of thousands of new residents, more and more cars are appearing on the roads. And if abroad, urbanists and major transport companies have long been racking their brains over finding a solution to this problem, it is rarely paid attention to here, and most often we are developing projects “for export”.

They are interested in new transport projects abroad for quite understandable economic reasons: for example, about 4.2 billion hours (in Russian) are lost annually in traffic jams in the USA. In general, financial losses from congestions on the roads are about $ 710 per person a year. About 11 billion liters of fuel are wasted while staying in traffic jams. Given the loss of time, the Texas Transport Institute estimates the loss of $ 78 billion a year, but the real amount is likely to be even more. The situation is much worse with our eastern neighbors: drivers lose (in Russian) above 800 dollars a year in traffic jams in Moscow.

Its own version of a “tablet from traffic jams” is available from SkyWay Technologies Co., which is engaged in developing SkyWay string transport project. Its difference from other companies’ offers is that SkyWay transport has ceased to be only a concept, it is now ready for commercial use and continues to develop.

The infrastructure applied in SkyWay transport consists of lightweight and stable overpasses. High resistance to loads is ensured by using the technology of pre-stressed structures. The use of such overpasses has also become possible due to the fact that SkyWay transport modules are considerably smaller in size than, for example, railway trains. Nevertheless, they are not inferior to “transport classics” in performance – automatic control system ensures an optimal speed and interval of the modules’ movement servicing a continuous flow of cargo and passengers.

SkyWay transport can be used both at short distances with frequent stops and at great distances. Passing traffic jams, high-speed city modules moving at the second level will relieve complex transport hubs in megacities. Such transport is rarely addressed to presently, and only in the most affluent countries. The reason for this is the high complexity and cost of construction. Nevertheless, thanks to the technology of infrastructure construction developed in SkyWay Technologies, transport of the second level will become more accessible and will be able to spread much more widely.

SkyWay project brings to the market not just vehicles, but an entire independent transport system. We have developed SkyWay transport samples that are suitable for almost all types of tasks: for passenger and freight traffic, there are both urban and high-speed vehicles produced in various formats depending on the expected passenger traffic.

To date, the concept offered by SkyWay Technologies Co. is already far from being just a visionary imagination. Three types of vehicles have already been tested and certified at the existing SkyWay transport test site, where functioning sections of various types of track structure are displayed. The certified SkyWay transport modules are a lightweight urban unibike, a larger urban unibus and a modular unicar that can consist of a different number of segments. Other vehicles are also in the process of certification – they can be seen at the proving ground of SkyWay Technologies in Maryina Gorka.

The high-speed SkyWay transport module is the most complicated one from the technical point of view. It has been introduced to the general public only recently, at InnoTrans 2018 exhibition in Berlin. The high-speed SkyWay unibus is a six-seater vehicle capable to accelerate up to 500 kilometers per hour. It has unique aerodynamic features, due to which its energy consumption is reduced to a record-breaking level: it will be 0.93 kg/100 passenger × km at the maximum speed.

In addition to vehicles designed for moving on string overpasses, SkyWay project is also developing other pods – they are needed to create a continuous system where a transport service will be provided to any customer with the task of any complexity. Thus, we are developing a cargo drone – an aircraft that could be used for construction of infrastructure and delivery of goods in hard-to-reach areas. The Company has also developed an electric car – its specialized prototype designed for people with disabilities has already been shown to the public. The platform of SkyWay electric car can be converted to a variety of tasks – for example, to solve the “last mile problem” – transferring a person from a major transport hub to the doors of his home.

A comprehensive vision offered by SkyWay project is designed to solve transport problems in complex. At the same time, the new infrastructure offered by SkyWay transport developers does not come into conflict with the existing one – SkyWay routes will be able to organically supplement the historically developed transport landscape and improve the mobility of people and goods in a modern city.
