Paid Parking Lots in the City Center, Wi-Fi at Public Transport Stops and SkyWay: Yekaterinburg Is Waiting for Something New

Paid Parking Lots in the City Center, Wi-Fi at Public Transport Stops and SkyWay: Yekaterinburg Is Waiting for Something New

17 May 2018

As you know, asphalt, paving tile and plaster are damaged in many cities as a result of snow melting. Yekaterinburg is no exception. Spring is the time of repair work, and this year the city authorities have an additional incentive to do everything efficiently and on time. Yekaterinburg must prepare for the first matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup with all the required care.

The work on improving the city’s infrastructure will affect all areas – the news will be (in Russian) for both motorists and those citizens who prefer public transport.

For motorists

The Vice-Mayor has bad news for amateurs of personal transport: over time, the city administration plans to get rid of free parking lots in the center, “The concept of the program developed within the framework of the Project Designing Bureau “Strelka” includes complete elimination of parking lots at 1905 Square. I hope someday we will come to this. There should be paid parking lots in the center.” If the city hosts Expo 2025, transport interchange hubs and intercept parking facilities will be built at a swift rate.

For supporters of public transport

Plans for the development of public transport network are also associated with Expo-2025. If it is obtained, a metro line may appear at Uralmash or reinforced concrete exhibition that will become a start to the rapid development of these districts.  But even regardless of the exhibition, the public transport network will grow.

Yevgeny Arkhipov also told that Wi-Fi and electronic boards may soon appear at Yekaterinburg stops of public transport. “Rostelecom” addressed the city municipality with the idea to reconstruct stopping points.

In general, Vice-Mayor Arkhipov noted the importance of developing alternatives to cars, “We have to make it clear to citizens that in some cases the need to ride in a personal car disappears, that it is easier and faster to get from point A to point B by an alternative transport, that you can leave a car at an intercept parking lot, take the subway and get anywhere without looking for a parking place.”

What about SkyWay?

Yevgeny Arkhipov said that SkyWay technology is currently being studied, although the city administration has some doubts, “We have visited Belarus recently, met with investors and received an offer. This is a rolling stock that moves above the ground, on a special string-rail overpass. They offered us to survey a route to the reinforced concrete exhibition and Academic district. We are thinking.”

Let us remind that during the recent visit of the delegation from the Urals, the guests made a tour of the pilot production facility, evaluated new samples of SkyWay rolling stock and witnessed performance trials at EcoTechnoPark. The parties discussed technical and investment aspects of Skyway transport, as well as the prospects for specific targeted construction of SkyWay transport systems in the Ural region. They have also signed an agreement on cooperation between Yekaterinburg authorities and SkyWay; the document is intended to accelerate the introduction of the innovation into a new concept of city development.

In an interview with SkyWay news service during his visit to EcoTechnoPark Yevgeny Arkhipov said, “What we saw here is a revolution. No one has ever shown us anything like this before. What we have seen before – for example, cableways – cannot be even compared with it. The latest technology, their own assembly, their own designing, – this is what we need to do.”

We would like to wish Yevgeny Arkhipov and other representatives of Yekaterinburg authorities to acquire more determination – together we can change the face of this wonderful city.
